Writing Hawa (OmdU)

Die Geschichte von drei Generationen Hazara-Frauen einer Fami- lie in Afghanistan. Regisseurin Najiba Noori begleitet ihre Mutter Hawa und ihre Nichte Zahra, die versuchen, sich von patriarchalen Traditionen zu emanzipieren. Als Kind zwangsverheiratet, kann Hawa erst mit 52 Jahren Lesen und Schreiben lernen. Schließlich rettet Hawa ihre Enkelin Zahra vor deren missbräuchlichem Vater und bringt sie in die Hauptstadt. Dort lernen sie gemeinsam und schmieden Pläne für die Zukunft. Doch die Machtübernahme der Taliban im August 2021 stellt das Leben der drei Frauen auf den Kopf: Zahra muss in das Dorf zurückkehren, aus dem sie geflohen war, und Najiba ist gezwungen, das Land zu verlassen. Aus der Ferne unterstützt sie Hawa im Kampf um ihre Träume.

A story of three generations of Hazara women from the same family in Afghanistan. Director Najiba Noori films her mother Hawa and her niece Zahra in their aspirations to emancipate themselves from pa- triarchal traditions. Forced into marriage as a child, Hawa is 52 years old when she can start learning to read and write. Hawa eventually saves her granddaughter Zahra from her abusive father in a remote village and takes her to the capital. There, they study together and make plans for the future. However, the takeover by the Taliban in August 2021 turns the lives of the three women upside down: Zahra has to return to the village she escaped from, and Najiba is forced to flee the country. From afar she helps Hawa fight for her dreams.
